Mac OS X keystrokes during startup

To Shutdown or let Sleep your Mac press:

Control-Eject » Opens the Shutdown dialog. Choose to shutdown, restart, or put your Mac to sleep. Hit "R" for restart, "S" for sleep and cmd-period for cancel.

Command-Option-Eject » Holding down for several seconds puts your Mac to sleep without a confirmation dialog.

Command-Option-Control-Eject » Shuts down your Mac after asking you whether or not to save any open documents.

Power button » Puts your Mac to sleep without a confirmation dialog.

  • 'Command' also known as 'Apple key' (⌘; the Apple key symbol apple disappeared from keyboards released on august 7th 2007 and later)
